We spent the morning hiking through the impressive Muir Woods redwood forest before heading down Highway 1 to Santa Cruz. We play only songs about California and stop at every “holy cow look at that view” spot along the way.
We stop in Mill Valley for lunch. Good Earth, a Whole Foods type grocery with made-to-order food is recommended by a local surf bro—”That place makes Whole Foods look like Mcdonalds, man.” It was pretty tasty. A few purchases at the surf shop and we’re on our way.
Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and arrive in Santa Cruz in time for a walk on the Warf and some quality time with the sea lions. We wander through the neighborhoods (post holiday quiet) stop for a slice at Pizza My Heart and end up at Hula’s Island Grill & Tiki Room where the bartender (California Ken Doll from Michigan) recommends 515 Kitchen & Cocktails. The drinks are fantastic, the bar has a 70s lounge vibe and we’re all getting a little sleepy. Cody & Shandi head on to another bar and Karl and I are lulled to sleep with a sweet ocean breeze.
It’s 5am, I’m wide awake and listening to sea lions, seagulls, crashing waves, and ….another garbage truck.
