It’s our last day in town, so we leave early for Golden Gate Park. We meander our way to the Japanese Tea Garden, missing free admission by 10 minutes. Free would have made it much less disappointing.

Haight-Ashbury is up next. It’s quiet. We hear lots of people are at Burning Man. Plus, it’s Labor Day. Head shops, clothing stores, and stores like Loved to Death, oddities store full of skulls and peculiar home decor.

We stop in Magnolia Gastropub & Brewery on Cody’s recommendation and it didn’t disappoint. Beer and wine on tap. Cool atmosphere. Tasty food. And an open-air sink outside the restrooms that makes you feel like you’re washing up for surgery in the late 1800s. We’re rejuvenated and continue on to a great dive bar where locals bring their dogs. The 300-pound biker with the chihuahua was our favorite.

Palmer’s Tavern has a great happy hour but is short-staffed. We sit at the bar feeling sorry for the bartender slinging (literally) drinks solo.

I spy twist cones at Super Duper Burgers and Karl quickly follows for a smashburger. Both were top notch. We keep walking. The neighborhood has changed drastically since we began walking in the Haight. We’re headed to the Marina District for a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge, sailboats, and fun times at the Wave Organ.

We’re averaging about 10 miles a day and our legs concur. Also, as quiet as it is in the Mission, the open windows let everyone know it’s garbage day.

Tomorrow, Napa.
