We’ve arrived!

The ride from Oakland to our Air BnB in San Francisco is full of industrial shipyard views and bumper to bumper traffic. But our Uber driver is a pro and his short cut has us at our door in no time.  The city is having record high temperatures—the first in 17 years—and we’re here just in time to experience 102 degree weather. After settling into our place in the Mission District, we’re ready to explore.

Valencia Street is bustling. Full of interesting people, discarded clothing, and loads of trash. We seek relief in art galleries, shops, the Pirate Supply Store, but we quickly learn that air conditioning is non-existent in this town, because well, it never gets hot.

We seek relief in a small, dark bar which is no better, but the beer is cold and the bartender recommends food from the That’s It market next door. Homemade tortillas make for a delicious quesadilla and Karl’s Cuban sandwich is epic (there was a hotdog inside).

We push on to another bar but it’s becoming unbearable so we head back to the house for showers, naps, and a fan. Our skin sticks to the pleather couch and Shandi and I consider purchasing a $15 fan on Amazon Prime Now.

Instead, we drag ourselves to another part of town for dinner at Southern Pacific Brewing. A giant warehouse with trees inside and gobs of 20-somethings. It’s after 9 and still incredibly hot and we slug back to our place.

No one sleeps. But tomorrow should only be 85.
