SUNDAY

A rainy start but an easy drive—mostly because Karl did all of the driving (yay). I played with the new camera a bit and waited for something interesting to shoot. To make it a true road trip, we stop at a few roadside attractions.

Dinosaur World was disappointing (sorry Brandon), but we grabbed a few shots then wandered down to an abandoned antique / junk shop. The National Corvette Museum is next. 50s and late 60s were our favorite models. Things just got weird in the 90s.

Next stop, “Cooter’s Place“— the Dukes of Hazzard museum. We’ll use the term “museum loosely here. More delightful memorabilia and expensive tchotchkes. But we couldn’t pass it up.

We check into Hotel Indigo downtown and start exploring. The weather is perfect and everyone seems to be in a good mood. And as we approach Broadway—the touristy honky tonk hot spot—the Sunday evening feels more like a Friday night. Gobs of people, loud music, and the smell of stale beer in the air. In an effort to get away from the chaos, we stumbled upon a bar with a mechanical bull and skiball—what luck! If we’d had cash, you’d be eyeballing some sweet shots of Karl getting whipped around on that bull.

Dinner is at Martin’s BBQ Joint. There’s a line out the door but everyone is smiling and chatting. We get a spot at the bar and watch 20 or so servers, cooks and runners hustle in and out of the kitchen. It smells amazing and Karl is beyond excited. It didn’t disappoint.

With full bellies, we continue on to Robert’s Western World. Highly rated and always suggested, we’re pretty excited. The band is great and the place is bustling. We snag the only table left and make friends with the couple next to us. Turns out they are from Indiana. Not a big deal. But they live in McCordsville, a one-stoplight town where the Nash family resided for 7 years. Mmm, that’s pretty cool. Oh, yeah. They also live in my old neighborhood. And play cards with my old neighbor. AND, they both went to Ball State—my alma mater. It made me feel a little…generic? It also made me want to pop halfway around the globe and really test out this whole “small world” thing.
